Steel Take on Muskegon in Eastern Conference Final
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel will face the Muskegon Lumberjacks for the third consecutive Clark Cup Playoffs, this time in the best-of-three Eastern Conference Final that begins Friday at Fox Valley Ice Arena.
The two teams met in the 2019 Eastern Conference Final with Chicago as the #2 seed defeating the #1 seed Muskegon three games to one in the best-of-five series. In 2018, the Steel won a best-of-three First Round series in Muskegon with an overtime victory in the third and deciding game.
Chicago advanced to the team's third Conference Finals appearance in the last four Clark Cup Playoffs with a 2-0 series sweep of the Dubuque Fighting Saints with a 2-1 win on April 30 and a 6-1 series-clinching victory on May 1, capturing the best-of-three series by winning both games at Fox Valley Ice Arena.
The series against Muskegon will be a best-of-three format, with Games 1 & 3 at home, and Game 2 on the road. Game 1 is set for Friday, May 7 with a 7:05 pm CT puck drop at Fox Valley Ice Arena while Game 2 will be contested the following night at Mercy Health Arena in Michigan, starting at 6:10 pm CT. Game 3, if necessary, will be played on Monday, May 10 at Fox Valley Ice Arena with a 7:05 pm CT start time. All home playoff games are presented by River Front Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram.
During the 2020-2021 regular season, the Steel charted a 5-4-1-0 record in 10 matchups against the Lumberjacks, scoring an average of 5.2 goals per game while Muskegon registered 5.1 goals per contest.
Steel forward Matt Coronato shares the Clark Cup Playoffs lead with six points (3G, 3A) in two games played while netminder Simon Latkoczy has a 1.00 goals-against average and .964 save percentage, the second-best marks for goaltenders in the posteason, in two victories between the Steel pipes.
Muskegon swept the Green Bay Gamblers in two games in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, taking Game 1 by a 3-2 margin and winning Game 2, 3-1. The Lumberjacks never trailed in the series thanks to forwards Cam Berg and Cristophe Tellier, each of whom tallied goals in both games for Muskegon.
Lumberjacks forward and San Jose Sharks prospect Danil Gushchin was held to just one goal in two games against the Gamblers. The Russian forward accounted for 23 points (12G, 14A) in nine appearances against the Steel during the regular season.
