Steel Score Five Unanswered Goals to Overcome 3-0 Deficit; Sweep Team USA with 5-3 Win
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The Chicago Steel came back from a three-goal deficit, scoring five straight goals against Team USA to capture a 5-3 victory on Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena, led by a four-assist night from Jackson Blake and two goals from Adam Fantilli.
The victory was Chicago's third in a row. The Steel have earned 11 of a possible 12 points in the first six games of the 2021-2022 season.
Lukas Gustafsson, Austen May and Sam Lipkin added markers for the Steel while netminder Nick Haas made 12 saves in net.
A night after the Steel cruised to a 6-2 victory in the same matchup, Team USA came out firing in the first period, scoring all three of their goals in the opening frame.
Team USA forward Austin Burnevik scored first on a pretty pass from forward Will Smith just five minutes into the game.
Oliver Moore added to the cushion, showing off blazing speed on a breakaway to extend the Team USA lead to 2-0.
Will Vote put himself into the goal column, netting a one-timer to give Team USA a commanding 3-0 lead after the opening frame.
The Steel comeback began halfway through the second period in front of the home ice crowd. Blake registered his first assist of the evening on a power play marker on a wrister from the left circle by defenseman Lukas Gustafsson to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The third period began with the Steel down by two but carrying momentum of a second period that totaled a 22-4 advantage in shots on goal for Chicago.
A little more than halfway through the final frame, the Steel cut the deficit to one goal when defenseman Austin May potted a one-time feed from Adam Fantilli, May's first marker as a member of the Steel.
Special teams helped dictate the result, as Chicago's game-tying and game-winning goals were scored with the man advantage.
Arizona Coyotes prospect Sam Lipkin notched his third goal of the season to knot the game at 3-3 with just over five minutes to play. On the doorstep after a Jackson Blake shot attempt, Lipkin stuffed home the rebound for his fifth point of the weekend (1G, 4A).
Just over a minute later, Adam Fantilli gave the Steel the lead for good. Defenseman Luca Fantilli found Blake who slid his fourth assist of the night to Adam to light the lamp from the left circle, putting the Steel ahead 4-3.
Adam Fantilli iced the game with an empty-net marker with just over a minute left to complete the weekend sweep.
Nick Haas earned the win in net, stopping 12 shots including a key save on a USA breakaway at the end of the first period which could have made it 4-0 at the time.
