Stars Snap Losing Streak in Sioux City
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars (6-9-1) scored three third-period goals to take down the Sioux City Musketeers (9-9-1), winning 6-3 on Tuesday night at Fleet Farm Arena.
James Stefan got the scoring started after finishing off a terrific passing play from Charles-Alexis Legault and Stanley Cooley at 8:41. The Laguna Beach, CA native picked up his first USHL goal with the tally. Legault registered his career point with the assist.
Noah Laba deflected a shot from Michael Mastrodomenico past the blocker-side of Schmid at 17:57, doubling Lincoln's lead. Like Legault, Mastrodomenico registered his first career assist.
Nikolai Mayorov lit the lamp right before the intermission, striking at 19:48 for his second goal of the season. Aidan Thompson picked up the loose puck from the high slot after Mayorov's zone entry and fired it on goal, leading to a loose puck outside the crease for the Russian winger to tap home.
After one period, the Stars were leading 3-0 and fired 18 shots on goal. Ryan Ouellette was perfect in the first period, turning aside eight Musketeers shots.
The Musketeers would respond with two goals separated by twenty seconds in the middle frame: one by Bennett Schimek at 9:10 and one by Tabor Heaslip at 9:30. Lincoln was forced to kill off two penalties in the second period and did so successfully.
After 40 minutes, the visitors held a 3-2 lead.
Sioux City would tie the game at 1:15 thanks to Matteo Costantini's power-play marker. Following the Musketeers' third unanswered goal, Dominic James responded with his second goal of the season 58 seconds later. Legault set him up perfectly at the side of the net at 2:13, giving the Stars a 4-3 lead.
The Musketeers would pressure throughout the final frame, but Ouellette and the Stars held on. Cole Craft and Jack Horbach added empty-net goals late in the game, snapping Lincoln's three-game losing streak.
Lincoln was 0-for-3 on the power-play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Ouellette made 34 saves to secure his sixth win of the season. Schmid made 27 saves in the loss.
For the sixth time this season, the Stars will meet the Tri-City Storm at Viaero Center on Friday night! Watch the game on HockeyTV or listen on Mixlr!
