Lincoln Stars News Release
KEARNEY, Neb. - The Lincoln Stars (18-26-4) came up short against the Tri-City Storm (30-13-3), losing 3-1 at Viaero Center on Saturday night.
Lincoln failed to produce much offense in the first period as Tri-City went on the attack early. The Stars defense did a great job of clearing out sticks from the slot and blocking shots, despite great pressure from the home team. Ben Schoen eventually broke through for Tri-City, deflecting a shot from Mason Wheeler upstairs past Aidan McCarthy at 16:23.
Schoen's goal was the lone tally of the period as Tri-City outshot Lincoln 8-3.
The Stars killed off a crucial 5-on-3 in the second period but were kept off the scoresheet through 40 minutes. Clay Hanus and Chase Pietila had chances, but Todd Scott turned them aside. Kyler Kovich doubled Tri-City's lead at 14:34 after a pass from Caden Villegas to the slot. After two periods, Lincoln was down 2-0 and was outshot 22-14.
Dominic James scored for the second consecutive game, notching a power-play goal at 1:55 of the third period following a hectic sequence. James Stefan and Gleb Veremyev were given the assists on the Minnesota-Duluth commit's tenth goal of the year.
Lincoln appeared to tie the game later on in the period when Nick Nardecchia tapped the puck through Scott during a mad scramble. The call on the ice was a goal, but the officials waved it off following a long review.
Matthew Knies shut the door on a Stars comeback with an empty-netter with under a minute to go in the game. McCarthy turned aside 29 of 31 shots while Scott made 19 saves. Lincoln was 1-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

On Tuesday, the Stars will hit the road again, traveling to Buccaneer Arena for a battle with Des Moines at 6:30 p.m. Watch the game on HockeyTV or listen in on Mixlr.
