Stars Advance with Thrilling 5-4 Overtime Win
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Lincoln Stars (2-1-0) punch their ticket to the Western Conference Semifinals with a thrilling 5-4 overtime win over the Sioux Falls Stampede (1-2-0) in Game 3 of the Western Conference First Round on Thursday night from Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Stampede picked up the game's first two goals in the first period on the stick of forward Adam Dawe at 3:19 and 14:00, respectively, to jump ahead 2-0. Stars forward Tristan Ashbrook answered back at 19:17 with a shot from the high slot to cut the lead in half, 2-1, and send the Stars into the middle frame with momentum.
In the second period, the Stampede added a power play goal at 6:40 from forward Kirill Panyukov to double the lead at 3-1. However, in the third period, the Stars began the comeback. At 1:15, Stars forward Collin Peters brought the Stars within one before forward Casey Dornbach tied the game on a cross ice play to the right post at 8:56, tying the game at 3-3. Stampede forward Paul DeNaples edged the home team ahead by one, but Stars forward Eero Teravainen went from end-to-end to tie the game, 4-4, at 14:09 and send the game into overtime.
At 19:26 of overtime, Stars forward Paul Cotter scored from the right circle to finish the comeback and seal the 5-4 win, sending the Stars to the Western Conference Semifinals. Stars netminder Derek Schaedig (2-0-0) saved 21 of 25 shots in the win, while Stampede goaltender Mikhail Berdin (1-1-0) halted 44 of 49 shots in the overtime loss.
The Stars begin the Western Conference Semifinals against the Waterloo Black Hawks on Saturday, Apr. 21 at 7:05 p.m. from Young Arena.
