Stamps Face Alouettes on Fan Appreciation Night

July 18, 2018 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Calgary Stampeders News Release

The Calgary Stampeders look to extend their season-opening winning streak to five games as they play host to the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday at McMahon Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

It's the fifth consecutive meeting with an East Division team for the Stamps, who defeated the RedBlacks 27-3 last week in Ottawa. The Alouettes are 1-3 and are coming off a bye. Their most recent game was also against Ottawa and resulted in a 28-18 home-field loss on July 6.

With an average of just 9.5 points allowed per game, the Stamps boast the CFL's stingiest defence so far in 2018 while the Alouettes are tied with Toronto as the league's lowest-scoring team at 15.3 points per game. Calgary's points-allowed total of 38 is the lowest by a Stamps team through the first four games of a season since the 1971 Stampeders allowed 21 points.

Gridiron Gardens opens

Saturday marks the debut of the Gridiron Gardens, which will be the pre-game gathering place for Stamps fans prior to select home games this season.

The Gridiron Gardens is located on the practice field immediately south of McMahon Stadium, with activities commencing at 4 p.m. and running until kickoff at 7 p.m.

The Gridiron Gardens will feature live entertainment, player autographs, Ralph the Dog, performances by the Outriders and sponsorship activations. Players from the Calgary Roughnecks as well as the Drill Crew dance team will be in attendance to help celebrate the great fans of Calgary and the surrounding area.

The first 1,000 fans will receive a pair of Stampeders sunglasses and there will be a Happy Hour Special from 4 to 5 p.m. with $5 beer and $5 burgers.

Purolator Tackle Hunger

The Grey Cup will be at the Gridiron Gardens on Saturday with fans being able to pose for a picture with the trophy in exchange for the donation of a non-perishable item or cash donation to the Purolator Tackle Hunger food drive, which benefits the Calgary Food Bank.

There will also be collection points at each entrance gate to the stadium.

The Calgary portion of Purolator's nation-wide Tackle Hunger program has been in existence for 15 years and in 2017 the generosity of Stampeders fans enabled the local drive to hit a major milestone - one million pounds of food collected.

Also

Prior to the game, Stamps players will be throwing autographed footballs into the stands as part of the team's acknowledgment of the best fans in the CFL.

At halftime, there will be a performance by the Dueling Piano Kings, presented by SkipTheDishes.
