Stampede's Season Comes to An End in Heartbreaking OT Loss to Lincoln

April 20, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Sioux Falls, SD-The Sioux Falls Stampede saw their season come to a close in heartbreaking fashion Thursday night, falling 5-4 in overtime to the Lincoln Stars at the PREMIER Center. Paul Cotter scored with just 34 seconds remaining in the extra session to give the Stars the Game 3 victory along with the best-of-three series, 2 games to 1. Adam Dawe scored twice in the first period while Kirill Panyukov and Paul DeNaples both tallied goals for the Herd who led 3-1 entering the third period. Mikhail Berdin turned aside 44 of 49 shots in goal for Sioux Falls who finished the regular season with 32 wins.

The Stampede wanted to get off to a quick start in Game 3 and they did just that when Adam Dawe scored just 3:19 into the game. Kevin Conley took the puck from the right circle and sent a perfect pass in front of the goal to Dawe who wristed a shot through the pads of Derek Schaedig for a 1-0 lead. It remained that way until the 14-minute mark when Dawe struck again. Jack St. Ivany sent the puck towards the Lincoln net and it deflected off a stick and right in front of the goal to Dawe who quickly knocked it home for a 2-0 lead. Just when it appeared the Herd would glide into the intermission with a two goal edge, the Stars got on the board with 43 seconds remaining. Tristian Ashbrook kept the puck inside the offensive zone and into the high slot where he wristed a shot through traffic and into the upper left-hand corner of the net to make it a 2-1 game. The Stars outshot the Herd 12-5 in the period.

The Stampede added to their lead 6:40 into the second when Kirill Panyukov tallied his second of the playoffs. Reid Stefanson took the puck inside the right circle before sending a pass into the slot for Panyukov who quickly one-timed the shot into the back of the net for a 3-1 advantage. The Stampede outshot the Stars 12-7 in the period.

The third was wild and crazy. The Stars battled back scoring just 1:15 into the period when Collin Peters wristed a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net. The Stars tied the game at 8:56 when Ashton Calder took the puck from behind the net and sent a behind the back pass to the side of the goal for Casey Dornbach who on-timed the puck through the pads of a sliding Berdin to make it a 3-3 game.

Sioux Falls rallied back at the 10:19 mark when Paul DeNaples tallied his first of the playoffs. DeNaples took the puck from center ice and raced down the right-wing boards before wristing a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net to give Sioux Falls a 4-3 lead. The Herd were trying to hang on late, but the Stars would tie the game at 14:09 when Eero Teravainen beat Berdin to tie the game, 4-4. Both teams had some chances late, but couldn't score and the game headed into overtime.

In the overtime, Lincoln threw everything they had at Berdin, but he made stop after stop and the Stampede created some chances of their own. One of those opportunities drew a penalty call and put the Stampede on the power play. The Herd created a couple of chances, but couldn't beat Schaedig and the game remained tied. It appeared the game would be headed into a second overtime, but Paul Cotter found the back of the net with just 34 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Stars the series win. Cotter brought the puck into the Stampede zone and skated just inside the right circle before wristing a shot past the stick side of Berdin for the 5-4 victory.

Lincoln outshot the Stampede 13-4 in overtime and 49-25 in the game. The Stars went 0-for-3 on the power play while the Stampede went 1-for-4.

The Stampede will now start preparing for the 2018 USHL Draft which will take place in early May and feature a Phase I and Phase II Draft. For more information follow the Stampede at sfstampede.com and on social media @sfstampede.
