Stampede Stop Hawks Again

December 3, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Sioux Falls Stampede swept a two-game weekend series at Young Arena, topping the Waterloo Black Hawks 3-1 Saturday.

Stampede goaltender Xavier Medina was the winner during both games. On Saturday, he stopped 27 Black Hawks shots in a follow-up of his 28-save Friday performance.

Waterloo went ahead with the lone goal of the first period at 9:41. Owen Baker attracted a lot of attention in front of the benches at center. Rather than trying to bull his way up right wing, he chipped the puck into the offensive zone. Myles Hilman zoomed up the slot after it, lifting a shot over Medina's glove.

The only goal of the second period came just 46 seconds out of intermission and five seconds after a Stampede power play had ended. Sam Harris had the puck just outside the crease and spun it into the net from a sharp angle on a feed from Nick Ring.

The Stampede converted the game's only other power play, scoring the goal that proved to be the winner 1:50 into the third. Max Rud sent a wrister from the deep slot through a maze of players and inside the post to the right of Jack Spicer.

The 2-1 score held until Chris Pelosi notched an empty-netter in the final two minutes.

The Hawks play in-state rivals next weekend, hosting the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday at 7:05 p.m. and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders Saturday at 6:05 p.m. The two games represent Waterloo's annual UAW Local 838 Weekend, with discounted tickets available to union members. To order seats, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
