
Stampede sign Freije

BOISE, Idaho (November 13, 2005) - The Idaho Stampede has announced the signing of 6-9 forward Matt Freije. Freije was a standout at Vanderbilt and was drafted in the second round (53rd overall) in the 2004 NBA draft by the Miami Heat. Last season, Freije played in 23 games for the New Orleans Hornets and signed in the off season with the Orlando Magic before being waived.
Freije played his college basketball at Vanderbilt University and finished his senior year averaging 18.4 ppg and 5.4 rpg while leading the Commodores' to the NCAA tournament's sweet sixteen. He finished his collegiate career as the Commodores' all-time leading scorer (1,891 points) and finished on the school's all-time list in free throws made (2nd, 446), blocked shots (3rd, 72) and three-point field goals made (6th, 183). Following his senior season (2003-04), Freije was named First Team All-SEC by both The Associated Press and league coaches, and was named Third Team All-American by the NABC.
Opening night for the Idaho Stampede at Qwest Arena is Saturday, Nov. 19, against the Yakama Sun Kings. Tip-off is 7:10 p.m, and the halftime show is The Rubberboy, a world-renowned contortionist.
