Stampede Fall to Team USA

January 22, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Plymouth, MI-On Star Wars Night the force was with Team USA as they tallied three goals in the second period en route to a 6-3 victory over the Stampede Saturday night at USA Hockey Arena. Kevin Conley scored twice while Adam Dawe tallied the other goal for the Herd who fell to 16-11-6 on the year. Mikhail Berdin started the night in goal stopping 15 of 19 shots while Jaxson Stauber turned aside 14 of 16 shots in relief.

Team USA wasted little time showing why they have been one of the best teams in the league this year, scoring just 1:42 into the game. John Beecher found Marshall Warren who blasted a shot from the right circle and over the shoulder of Stampede goaltender Mikhail Berdin and into the net for a 1-0 lead. It remained that way until the 12:09 mark when Nolan Walker sent a perfect pass over to the bottom of the right circle to Kevin Conley who blasted a shot under the crossbar and into the net for his 10th of the season to tie the game at one. Team USA regained the lead at 16:55 when Trevor Zegras wristed a shot into the net to give the U.S. a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first period. The Stampede outshot Team USA 11-10 in the period.

USA picked up right where they left off in the second, scoring just 1:13 in when Patrick Moynihan picked up a loose puck in front of the net and beat Berdin for a 3-1 advantage. Things settle down after that and the Herd had some great scoring chances, but USA goaltender Cameron Rowe was very strong in goal and made some highlight reel saves to keep it a 3-1 game. Things went from bad to worse for the Herd at 10:26 when Cole Caufield picked up a loose puck at the bottom of the right circle and lifted it past a stretched out Berdin for a 4-1 advantage. That sent Berdin to the bench and Jaxson Stauber into the game. The Herd once again generated some scoring chances, but were once again denied and ended the period by allowing a goal from Trevor Zegras with 36 seconds left to give USA a commanding 5-1 lead. USA outshot the Herd 17-11 in the period.

The Stampede went on the power play early in the third and connected when Kevin Conley tallied his second of the night at 2:14. Jaxon Nelson took the puck in the left-wing corner and made a behind the back pass through the slot and right onto the tape of Conley who quickly knocked home to make it a 5-2 game. Right when it looked like the Herd might be poised for a big comeback, Team USA put the game away for good when Ryder Rolston scored on a nice backdoor play at 10:41. The Stampede ended the night with their second power play goal of the game at 14:28 when Adam Dawe knocked home a pass from Reid Stefanson to pull the Herd back within three goals, but time would run out on the Herd and they fell 6-3.

Sioux Falls outshot Team USA 16-8 in the third period and 38-35 on the game. The Stampede are now just 2-3-2 when they have outshot opponents this season. The Herd finished the night 2-for-3 on the powerplay while team USA finished 1-for-3.
