St. Louis Ambush Kick off Postseason against Rival Comets this Weekend
St. Charles, Missouri - The St. Louis Ambush begin the postseason when they clash with their Missouri rivals, the Kansas City Comets, in a pair of games this weekend. The Major Arena Soccer League Ron Newman Cup Playoff quarterfinal action kicks off with game one on Friday, March 26 at 7:05 p.m. at the Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence. The series then shifts to St. Charles, where the Ambush will host the Comets in game two Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. at the Family Arena. If the series is tied after two games, a 15-minute mini-game will be played after game two to decide which team will advance to the semifinals.
The Comets finished the pandemic-abbreviated 2021 regular season with a 7-5 record, while the Ambush finished 8-7, with the two teams going 1-1 in head-to-head action. A battle against COVID-19 and a slew of injuries saw the Ambush suffer three straight losses in early February, but the team bounced back to win four of their last five regular season games. The Comets also finished the regular season strong, winning six of their last seven matches.
Kansas City's offense is anchored by player and Head Coach Leo Gibson, who finished the regular season tied for fifth in the MASL in points (27), fourth in assists (12) and tied for first in power play goals with three. Gibson tallied four goals and five assists in his last three games played. Ray Lee has also been potent on offense, with five goals and three assists in his last three games, while Lucas Sousa posted four goals and three assists in his last three appearances.
The Ambush offense had two top scorers, with Vadim Cojocov and Tony Walls each having nine goals. Max Ferdinand led the team in assists with nine. Walls closed out the season strong, tallying five goals in his last three games, while Corey Adamson had four goals and an assist in his last three matches and JT Thomas posted four goals in his last three.
In goal, Ambush goalkeeper Paulo Nascimento and Comets goalkeeper Nicolau Neto tied for the league's fourth-best save percentage at .706 and Paulo finished the season with a 5.23 goals against average, good for fourth in the league.
Tickets for Sunday's series-deciding game are on sale at the Family Arena box office or online at Ticketmaster.com. All seats for Sunday's match are $20 and are general admission. The Ambush will also be giving away a free team poster on Sunday. All MASL postseason games can be viewed online at Facebook Live PPV .
