Spitfires Beat Sarnia 3-2 in a Shootout
January 26, 2020 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Spitfires traveled to Sarnia for a matchup with the Sting Sunday afternoon. This was the third of six matchups this season. The Spitfires lead the season series 2-0 heading into the game.
In the first period, the game got off to a slow start and slow pace. The Spitfires were on the powerplay just over five minutes into the game when Corcoran blasted it past the netminder, making it 1-0. Henault and Johnston drew assists on the play. That was all the action for the period. Spitfires lead the shots 14-7 after 20 minutes.
In the second period, just two minutes into the frame, the Spitfires scored to make it 2-0. Johnston shot it and recollected his own rebound to double the Spitfires lead. But the Sting didn't go away, they came back with lots of pressure and ramped up the pace of the game. Late in the period, the Sting scored to make it a one-goal game. Shots were 25-21 after 40 minutes of play.
In the third period, the Sting appeared to tie the game, but it was ruled no goal after a glove pushed the puck over the line. However, Sarnia scored with just under six minutes to play and this one counted, tying the game at 2. We were off to overtime.
The overtime period solved nothing as teams traded chances, but we were headed to a shootout. It was a long eight-rounder, and it was Spitfires Will Cuylle who scored the winning goal. Medina stood tall and caused the Sarnia shooter to miss and the Windsor Spitfires took the game by a final score of 3-2.
The Spitfires' next game is Thursday, January 30th, versus the Flint Firebirds. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
