Sparks Sign Nia Coffey

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Sparks announced today the signing of Nia Coffey, a 6-foot-1 guard/forward entering her fifth year in the WNBA. Coffey most recently played in the 2020 WNBA bubble with the Phoenix Mercury. For her career, she's appeared in 98 games, starting 18, with averages of 3.8 points and 2.4 rebounds in 12.4 minutes per game. She's a career 35.2% shooter from the three-point line.

"The addition of Nia Coffey provides us with additional athleticism, youth and versatility on the wing," General Manager/Head Coach Derek Fisher said. "Nia has shown the ability to make outside shots, attack the basket, and defend multiple positions. We're excited to have her join our group and compete."

After attending Northwestern University, Nia Coffey was drafted No. 5 overall in the 2017 WNBA Draft by the San Antonio Stars. After her rookie season, the team moved to Las Vegas as the Aces and Coffey averaged 5.3 points per game in her second season, shooting 40% on 3-pointers. Before the 2019 season, the Atlanta Dream acquired Coffey in a trade with the Aces. She averaged 5.0 points per game and again shot an efficient 37.9% on 3-pointers in 2019. The Phoenix Mercury then acquired Coffey prior to the 2020 season in a three-team trade.

 Coffey is originally from Saint Paul, Minnesota and comes from a family with a strong basketball pedigree. Her father Richard Coffey played in the NBA and her brother Amir Coffey is a current player with the LA Clippers organization.

The Sparks will play their 25th anniversary season in 2021.
