Sparks Forward Candace Parker and Guard Kristi Toliver Named All-WNBA
Los Angeles - Los Angeles Sparks forward Candace Parker was named to the All-WNBA First-Team and guard Kristi Toliver was named to the All-WNBA Second-Team, the WNBA announced today.
For Parker, the honor is the second of her career, earning the first in her rookie season in 2008. Parker finished the regular season ranked first in the league in blocks (2.3 bpg), tied for first in double-doubles (18), third in rebounds (9.7 rpg), and seventh in scoring (17.4 ppg). She was the runner-up for the 2012 WNBA Most Valuable Player.
Toliver had the best season of her career in 2012, earning the WNBA Most Improved Player of the Year, presented by Boost Mobile. Toliver had career highs in scoring (17.5 ppg), assists (4.9 apg), rebounds, (3.2 rpg), and steals (1.3 apg). Toliver also established career highs in field goal percentage (.491) and minutes (31.5 mpg).
Parker and Toliver were key contributors to help lead Los Angeles back to the playoffs, where the Sparks reached the Western Conference Finals.
Parker had the second most votes for All-WNBA with 176 points. The Connecticut Sun's Tina Charles led with 196 points. Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever (161 points), as well as guards Cappie Pondexter of the New York Liberty (128 points) and Seimone Augustus of the Minnesota Lynx (95 points) rounded out the First-Team.
Toliver had 91 points to place her on the Second-Team. Minnesota Lynx forward Maya Moore (102 points), Chicago Sky center Sylvia Fowles (95 points), Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen (88 points), and San Antonio Silver Stars forward Sophia Young (67 points) rounded out the Second-Team.
Voting for the All-WNBA First- and Second-Teams was conducted by a panel of 41 national and local sportswriters and broadcasters at the conclusion of the regular season. Players were selected by position and received five points for each First-Team vote and three points for each Second-Team designation.
In honor of being named to the All-WNBA First- and Second-Teams, each player will receive a Tiffany & Co. designed trophy. In addition, $10,000 will be awarded to each member of the First-Team, while each member of the Second-Team will receive $5,000.
