York Revolution News Release
After getting buried in a big hole in the first inning, Monday's series opener proved to be a long one for the York Revolution, who lost to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 10-3 in front of 3,421 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium. With two games remaining on the longest homestand of the season's first half, York will look to even things in the series on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
Southern Maryland plated eight runs in the top of the first inning to take control right out of the gate. Revs starter Jesus Sanchez (1-3) faced six batters, with all six reaching and scoring, as the lefty did not record an out. A Brian Barton grand slam highlighted the outburst, while Jeremy Owens and Paco Figueroa also added RBI doubles against reliever Yunior Novoa, and Chin-Lung Hu provided an RBI single.
York needed 27 outs from its bullpen, and five relievers held the Crabs in check the rest of the game, as York ended up outscoring Southern Maryland 3-2 over the final eight-and-a-half innings.
Novoa lasted 4.0 innings, allowing two runs in the first but nothing thereafter. Dumas Garcia allowed just a run on a sacrifice fly by Jesse Gutierrez in his two innings of work. James Houser tossed a scoreless seventh. Stephen Penney gave up a solo homer to Rich Giannotti pinch-hitting to lead off the eighth but nothing further, and Kris Regas recorded three groundouts in a perfect ninth.
York plated two runs in its half of the first inning as Brandon Haveman led off with a triple to right-center and scored on a groundout by Scott Grimes. Michael Hernandez later stroked an RBI single to right-center, making the score 8-2 after one inning.
Those were the only two runs allowed by Crabs starter Matthew Vasquez (4-1) who allowed just four hits in six innings for the win.
Grimes homered to left-center with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for York's final run, with reliever Eduardo Morlan ejected by home plate umpire Pat McLaughlin for arguing balls and strikes after serving up the long ball. It was Grimes' second homer in as many games, and the 40th of his Revs career, moving within two home runs of tying Jason Aspito's Revolution career record of 42. It was also Grimes' 21st homer all-time at Sovereign Bank Stadium, matching former Revs outfielder and current Long Island Duck Matt Esquivel for the all-time stadium record.
Notes: Sanchez was released during the game by Revs manager Andy Etchebarren, who had been ejected from the dugout by McLaughlin two batters into the game after Sanchez had issued a pair of walks. It marked the third time in the last six games that a Revs starter went less than 3.0 innings (Sanchez twice). The Revs will send Shaun Hill (1-0, 3.04) to the mound on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. opposite Southern Maryland's Hunter Jones who will make his Atlantic League debut. It is a Fill Your Tummy Tuesday, a WellSpan Health Silver Sluggers Club Tuesday with Shurfine Baseball Bingo, and it's also Negro Leagues Night. Each of the final two days on the homestand are also part of the Revs' "School's Out Blowout" promotion, with students getting tickets for just $5. Students buying online at YorkRevolution.com can simply enter the promo code "student12" before checking out, and the deal can also be taken advantage of in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
