Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The recent hitting struggles for the Round Rock Express (11-15) continued on Tuesday night as the team managed just two base hits in an 11-0 loss to the Nashville Sounds (11-11).
Express starter RHP Eddie Gamboa faced the minimum in the first inning but was removed from the game prior to the start of the second frame. RHP Jose Valdespina (1-1, 16.50) emerged from the bullpen to take the reins, ultimately suffering the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings. Nashville reliever RHP Michael Brady (1-1, 4.30) earned the win after blanking Round Rock on one hit in three innings of work.
The Sounds scored early and often in the convincing win. In the second, DH Chris Parmelee lined a two-out double to left field before 3B Matt Chapman stepped to the plate and launched a two-run shot that crashed into the Express bullpen in left-center field.
The visitors doubled their lead in the third thanks to four straight singles courtesy of SS Franklin Barreto, 2B Joey Wendle, RF Mark Canha and 1B Matt Olson. In the fourth, C Bruce Maxwell led off with a double then took third on a Kenny Wilson groundout. The catcher trotted home on a wild pitch in the next at-bat. Barreto and Wendle kept the inning alive with consecutive singles. A Canha sacrifice fly scored Barreto from third, then an Olson double sent Wendle home to increase the Nashville lead to 7-0.
Canha and Nunez teamed up for a pair of solo homers off Express reliever RHP Brady Dragmire in the sixth inning, extending the Sounds advantage to 9-0. Wendle hit his team's fourth home run of the night in the eighth.
For the first time in Triple-A franchise history, a position player took the mound for the Express. Pat Cantwell left his catcher's gear in the bullpen to throw the ninth inning. Cantwell struck out Parmelee before allowing a home run to Chapman. The righty recovered to retire two of the final three hitters he faced.
The Express and Sounds resume their four-game series on Wednesday night. Nashville RHP Paul Blackburn (1-2, 1.64) is scheduled to start against a Round Rock pitcher yet to be announced. First pitch at Dell Diamond is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Single game tickets, season memberships, Flex Plans and Kids Club packages are on sale now. For more information on the Express, visit or call (512) 255-2255. Keep up with the Express on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter !
