Somerset Patriots Win Opener 5-1

Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-1 in their season opener in front of 5,981 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Thursday evening.

The Blue Crabs took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Ryan Mulhern.

The Patriots answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to take the lead. Jonny Tucker led off with a single and Jake Fox was hit by a pitch to reach base. Corey Smith then followed with a base hit to score Tucker and Eddy Martinez-Esteve reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Fox. Mike Wilson capped off the inning for the Patriots with an RBI single to score Smith and give the Patriots a 3-1 advantage.

Somerset added to their lead in the bottom of the second after Yunesky Sanchez (1) drove a solo homerun over the left field wall to make the score 4-1.

An RBI single by Tucker in the bottom half of the sixth brought home Luis Montanez to increase the Patriots lead to 5-1.

Erik Arnesen (1-0) got the win for Somerset after allowing a run in six innings of work while striking out nine batters. Gabriel Hernandez (0-1) suffered the loss for the Blue Crabs, surrendering four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
