Tennessee Smokies News Release

SEVIERVILLE, TN - The Smokies moved to 3-0 on the season in extra-inning games on Saturday night as they defeated the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 4-3. Eddy Martinez singled in the bottom of the 10th inning and Yasiel Balaguert, who started the inning on second base, scored to win the game.

After a solid outing in his last start, Trevor Clifton carried that over into Saturday's game. Clifton struggled early in the first inning, giving up two runs, but managed to recover. After the first inning, Clifton allowed just one more hit and finished the game going five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and struck out three.

The Smokies were forced to play catch up before they even stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first inning after the Jumbo Shrimp scored the two runs on Clifton. The Smokies were not able to answer the bell for the first 4.2 innings as they were no-hit.

In the fifth, the Smokies got a rally going thanks to a walk of Eddy Martinez. With two outs, Trey Martin singled to put two runners on and give the Smokies their first hit of the game. Jesse Hodges was the next batter, and he walked to load the bases for Zack Short. Short was patient at the plate and drew a walk to score a run. The Smokies would get just the one run though as Charcer Burks struck out.

After the Jumbo Shrimp increased their lead in the top of the sixth, the Smokies immediately got that run back as Jason Vosler hit his third home run of the season to cut it to 3-2. The Smokies would rally after the home run and tie the game up later in the bottom of the inning on a Carlos Penalver single after Rice had doubled.

That would be all the scoring until the 10th inning when Martinez hit a fly ball that was lost in the lights by the Jacksonville outfielders, allowing Balaguert to score the winning run.

Scott Effross replaced Clifton in the game and in his fifth appearance of the season, threw two innings, allowing one run on three hits. James Norwood replaced Effross and threw two scoreless innings, keeping his ERA at 0.00 for the season. Craig Brooks picked up his first win of the season as he threw a scoreless 10th inning.

The Smokies will be back in action on Sunday as they take on Jacksonville at 2 p.m at home. Duncan Robinson is expected to go to the mound for the Smokies while the Jumbo Shrimp will start Max Duval. It will be a U.S. Cellular Fun Day tomorrow afternoon.

The day will feature a free youth clinic presented by Rocky Top Customz beginning at 12:00 pm.
