Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
ATLANTA (August 3, 2011) - The Atlanta Silverbacks have signed midfielder NICO COLALUCA, the club announced Tuesday, pending USSF and ITC approval.
Colaluca comes to the Silverbacks after spending time with Norrby IF of the Swedish second division. The 25-year-old midfielder made 10 appearances in league and cup play for Norrby IF, scoring two goals.
A native of Providence, R.I., Colaluca began his professional career in Major League Soccer with the Colorado Rapids. He was drafted sixth overall in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft by the Rapids, and went on to make four appearances for the club before being traded to the MLS's New England Revolution in 2009.
Colaluca, a 2010 graduate of the MLS Generation Adidas program, appeared in seven games for the Revolution over the course of two seasons. The Revolution also loaned him to the PDL's Western Mass Pioneers, where he made three appearances in 2009.
The 5-foot-9 midfielder starred at the University of Virginia for two seasons. Colaluca was named to the 2004 Freshman All-American Team, and he also garnered All-ACC Tournament and All-ACC Freshman honors. In the collegiate offseason, he was also a member of the Rhode Island Stingrays, a PDL team based in his home state.
In signing with the Silverbacks, Colaluca, who has also trained with the U.S. national team at the U-17 and U-20 levels, will be reunited with former Rapids teammate and current Silverbacks midfielder Ciaran O'Brien.
