Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (4-9/30-50) picked up six perfect innings from their starter and held on to down the Delmarva Shorebirds (6-7/36-44) 1-0 Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park. The 1-0 win marked the second shutout of the homestand for Lakewood and the second time this season they have taken down the Shorebirds in shutout fashion.

Perfection was in the air over the first six innings, as the BlueClaws watched their starter Severino Gonzalez effortlessly dissect the Shorebirds lineup.

Gonzalez (1-0) retired the first three in order in the first, and continued the trend over the next five innings. The righty made his second start and did not allow a baserunner and struck out nine over his six perfect frames.

Parker Bridwell matched the BlueClaws righty in the run column with two scoreless innings, before the top of the order was due up in the third. Bridwell (5-7) picked up two ground outs to begin the inning and faced Willie Carmona with nobody on and two outs.

The Lakewood designated hitter got a fastball over the inner-half of the plate from Bridwell and didn't miss it. Carmona dropped the barrel of the bat and crushed it over the 20-foot high wall in right center and into the tiki bar for a solo homerun that gave the BlueClaws the 1-0 lead.

From there it was all pitching and defense for Lakewood. After Gonzalez delivered his six perfect innings, the BlueClaws turned to the bullpen and selected Zach Cooper to be first on in relief.

Coop began his outing by hitting Greg Barber with an inside fastball and was then touched up for a single to left by Tucker Nathans to put two on with nobody out. With the no-hit and perfect games put to rest, Cooper regrouped and struck out the next two hitters and induced a 6-3 ground out to retire the side.

Steven Inch was next out of the bullpen and called upon to capture the final six outs. In the eighth, Inch retired the side in order and picked up a strikeout before taking the mound in the ninth.

The Canadian righty returned for the final inning and retired the first two in the before Tucker Nathans singled to put the tying run on. Inch rebounded to strike out Creede Simpson, picked up his 10th save, and preserved the 1-0 shutout victory.

As a staff, the three pitchers combined to throw 14 strikeouts, a season high.

The Shorebirds staff had themselves quite the night as well. Bridwell's only mistake was the homer by Carmona and he bounced back to deliver five strong innings. The righty allowed the one run on two hits, walked three and struck out six. Ashur Toliver took over in the sixth, pitched three perfect innings and struck out six in the process.

The Lakewood BlueClaws and the Delmarva Shorebirds get set to wrap up the three game series with the finale Wednesday night at 7:05pm from FirstEnergy Park. RHP Miguel Nunez (5-6, 4.73) looks to snap a five start losing streak and will be matched up against LHP Bennett Parry (0-1, 5.91) in the final game of the seven game homestand.
