Spokane Indians News Release
Spokane, WA
-Since arriving in Spokane in mid-July, catcher Yefry Castillo has quietly been one of the Indians best hitters. On Friday night in front of 6,831 screaming fans at Avista Stadium, the soft-spoken Castillo delivered in thunderous fashion, cracking a walk-off double to centerfield that scored Hirotoshi Onaka and sent Spokane past Boise 3-2.
The Indians took a 2-1 lead into the top of the ninth, but closer Matt West (1-2) promptly allowed a long home run to Hawks pinch-hitter Ryan Cuneo that tied the game at two.
Spokane responded quickly in their half of the inning, as Edwin Garcia and Trever Adams both drew walks against Boise reliever Hector Mayora (1-2). Onaka came on as a pinch-runner for Garcia, and after a Brett Nicholas fly out to leftfield, Castillo came to the plate and delivered another dramatic victory for the Indians.
Castillo's hit marked the sixth game this season in which the Indians have won in their final at-bat.
First-round pick Kevin Matthews made his third start of the year with Spokane and provided 4.2 tough innings, striking out five and allowing just one run. Right-hander Arlett Mavare continued his stellar relief work with 1.1 scoreless frames and the indomitable Kyle Hendricks fanned four in two innings.
The win moved Spokane to 10-14 in the second half (30-32 overall).
