Seattle Storm to Support Brittney Griner's BG's Heart and Sole Shoe Drive
May 11, 2022 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) - Seattle Storm News Release
SEATTLE - The Seattle Storm announced today that the team will hold BG's Heart and Sole Shoe Drive in support of Brittney Griner this Saturday, May 14, at Climate Pledge Arena, as the team hosts the Phoenix Mercury at noon.
BG's Heart and Shole Shoe Drive, now in its fifth season, was founded in 2016 by Phoenix Mercury's Brittney Griner, as the 6-foot-9 center saw a need amongst the homeless population of Phoenix. This year, the initiative takes place in all 12 WNBA markets, as the league tries to bring attention to Griner's detention in Russia since February 17.
"In hosting the 'BG Heart and Sole Drive' in Seattle, the Storm wants to highlight and extend the generous efforts and contributions of Brittney Griner and the Phoenix Mercury to their community," said Alisha Valavanis, Storm President and CEO. "I know Storm fans will show up as we do our best to support BG by addressing a real need in our local community as well."
On Saturday, Storm Fans are encouraged to bring new and gently worn sneakers to the arena and drop them off into bins that will be placed at every entrance. The pairs collected will be donated to Mary's Place, a nonprofit organization in Seattle that provides safe, inclusive shelter and services for women, children and families on their journey out of homelessness.
Besides in-person donations, fans can also make financial contributions through Phoenix Rescue Mission's Heart and Sole landing page. Every $1.92 provides a meal and much more, going toward shelter, clothing, counseling, recovery, and lots of hope and encouragement in Phoenix, Arizona, where Griner started the philanthropic outreach.
