Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - Beginning with the Joe "Moose" Gates Classic on April 1, the ninth annual High School Challenge will feature 26 teams from the Region competing in 15 games in the month of April at U. S. Steel Yard, the home of the Gary SouthShore RailCats, it was announced today at the event's annual Media Day.

Players, coaches and school administrators joined media members and the RailCats front office staff Thursday afternoon in the Diamond Club at U. S. Steel Yard to kick-off the event with a catered lunch, ballpark tours and addresses from RailCats Manager Greg Tagert and The RailCats Ambassador Tanner Townsend.

The 2011 High School Challenge will get underway on April 1 and 2 with the Joe "Moose" Gates Classic, which will feature local schools competing in a two day tournament. The Joe "Moose" Gates Classic will pit Calumet against Roosevelt at 4 p.m. and West Side against Lew Wallace at 7 p.m. in the first round on Friday night. The two winners will play in the Championship Game the following day at 4 p.m. preceded by the Consolation Game at 1 p.m.

"High School baseball was such an incredible passion for Joe between his playing days at Roosevelt and his 30 years coaching at Wirt, so making his legacy part of the High School Challenge was an obvious fit," said RailCats President/General Manager Andy Viano. "It's great to give Gary's baseball teams a chance to compete and hopefully it's an opportunity to raise money for the Joe Gates Scholarship Fund and help a local student move on to college."

Tickets to the 2011 High School Challenge can be purchased through participating schools for $3 and tickets will also be available at The Steel Yard Box Office on the day of the game for $5/ticket. Brief game recaps along with a complete scoreboard will be available at www.railcatsbaseball.com. In addition, select games will be broadcast on a variety of media outlets throughout Northwest Indiana.

The first game ever played in U. S. Steel Yard was a high school game in 2003 and the RailCats have hosted the High School Challenge each year since the stadium opened.
