Sandberg Extends On-Base Streak in Loss

June 28, 2017 - Florida State League (FSL) - Clearwater Threshers News Release

Cord Sandberg drew a pair of walks to extend his on-base streak to 13 games, but the Miracle walked off, 3-2 in the series opener on Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium.

Jose Taveras tossed six shutout innings in the start, limiting Fort Myers to five hits and three walks while striking out five in the no-decision.

The Miracle (36-37, 3-2) connected for three-straight one-out hits against Tyler Gilbert (0-4) in the ninth, with Shane Kennedy 's single to right plating the decisive run.

Clearwater (41-34, 3-2) remains winless against the Miracle this year.

The Threshers got on the board in the fifth inning, when Sandberg worked a two-out walk and Jose Pujols doubled to right to score Sandberg with the game's first run.

The 1-0 lead held until the seventh.

Facing reliever Luke Leftwich, Tanner English singled and Sean Miller doubled him in to tie the game. An errant pickoff throw moved Miller down to third, and Max Murphy 's single to center put the Miracle on top, 2-1.

Clearwater managed to bring it back even in the eighth. Grenny Cumana and Mark Laird connected for back-to-back one-out singles, before the Miracle called in Sam Clay (6-0). Emmanuel Marrero put down a safety squeeze on the first pitch to push home Cumana and tie the game at two.

Gilbert worked around a leadoff error to strand the go-ahead run in scoring position in the eighth, but Miller's one-out double to right set the table for the Fort Myers walkoff in the ninth. Murphy's single to left moved the winning run to third, before Kennedy knocked one to right to end the ballgame.

Game two will take place on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., as Jacob Waguespack (4-2) takes the hill opposed by Lachlan Wells (3-9).
