Sand Gnats Edge Shorebirds 4-2 in 13 Innings

Salisbury, MD - The Savannah Sand Gnats (13-14) scored two runs in the 13th inning to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (10-21) 4-2 on Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

The Sand Gnats struck first with runs in the first and second innings. In the first, Jorge Rivero hit a lead off single. With two outs, Stefan Sabol hit a ground rule double to left-center field to put runners at second and third. Two batters later, Cole Frenzel singled to give the 'Gnats a 1-0 lead. In the second, Jeff Glenn scored from first on a double by Dimas Ponce and an error on Gregory Lorenzo, who fielded the double and then had the ball slip out of his hand.

The Shorebirds recorded one hit and no runs over the first five innings. In the sixth inning, the Shorebirds got on the board. Roderick Bernadina hit a line drive double to right-center field. With one out, Lorenzo singled to left field to put runners at first and third. Then, Lucas Herbst hit a soft line drive single to right field to trim the deficit to 2-1.

In the seventh, the Shorebirds tied the game at 2-2. Nik Balog hit a one out single to left field. He was pinch run for by Kris Richards. Then, on a grounder up the middle, the second baseman fielded the ball and tried to flip the ball to the second base bag and the ball hit the slide of Richards and rolled into left field to allow Richards to go to third. Bernadina hit a weak grounder to second to bring in the tying run.

The Shorebirds bullpen held the Sand Gnats to two hits and no runs between the sixth and 12th innings. Mark Blackmar and Mychal Givens each tossed two scoreless innings while Dennis Torres hurled three scoreless innings and retired the final seven batters he faced.

In the 13th inning, the Sand Gnats broke through with two runs against Sander Beck. Maikis De La Cruz singled and reached second on a balk. Two batters later, Eudy Pina hit a triple to straight away center field to give the Sand Gnats a 3-2 lead. Then, Frenzel singled to stretch the lead to 4-2.

Savannah reliever Wandel Mesa earned the win, his first of the season, by throwing three scoreless innings.

The Shorebirds and Sand Gnats will close out the series on Tuesday, July 23 at 7:05pm.
