San Diego Renews Old Rivalry with Dallas Friday at Pechanga Arena San Diego

March 13, 2019 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) - San Diego Sockers News Release

UPCOMING MATCH | FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 7:35pm

SAN DIEGO SOCKERS (16-1) vs DALLAS SIDEKICKS (8-10)

An old-school rivalry will be renewed this Friday, 7:35 p.m. when the Dallas Sidekicks venture to San Diego to meet the Sockers on "Best of San Diego" Night at Pechanga Arena San Diego. The original schedule had Turlock visiting San Diego, but the teams were switched after a scheduling conflict. San Diego won the only meeting of the season 9-3 on December 26 in Texas. The Sockers/Sidekick rivalry dates back to the mid-80s in the Major Indoor Soccer League. The teams battled in the 1991-92 MISL Championship Series, which was won by the Sockers.

Dallas (8-10) enters the contest in third place in the Southwest Division, challenging Rio Grande Valley (11-5) for the final postseason berth in the division. The Sidekicks can look at their -29 goal differential (GF 99 - GA 128) as a cause for their current standing. Offensively, Dallas is led by VcMore Eligwe (23-6=29) and former Socker Jamie Lovegrove (21-4=25). Supporting the forwards is midfielder Ricardinho Cavalcante (3-18=21). Goalkeeper Juan Gamboa (6-7, 6.75) backstops the Sidekicks defense.

San Diego is seeking their 15th straight win and maintaining the #1 seed in the MASL. The defense, which allowed a season-high six goals, looks to rebound after a sub-par performance on Sunday vs. Ontario. Scoring leader Brandon Escoto's (22-18=40) 8-game goal streak was snapped on Sunday.

CAPTAIN CHILES CONTINUES GWG MAGIC

Kraig Chiles tallied the game-winning golden goal in overtime on Sunday against Ontario. The team captain now has a team-high five GWG, which puts him tied for second in the MASL (Tayou, MON, 6).

POWER PLAY ADDS DONOVAN, SCORES GOAL

The Sockers power play has been improving since adding Landon Donovan to the power play unit on February 15. Since his addition, San Diego is 4-for-7 and has increased to a 31% success rate (highest of the season). The team, who is second in the MASL in PP opportunities (12-for-39), ranks 15th out of 17 teams (Mississauga is last at 26%). Last year, the team worked at a 53% success rate. The penalty killing unit's rate is at 48% (12- for-23).

STOUT DEFENSE

San Diego has allowed a league-best 59 goals against this season (2. Rio Grande Valley, 64). The Sockers led the MASL last season (2017-18) in fewest goals allowed with 82.

NEWCOMERS MAKING AN IMPACT

Christian Gutierrez, Travis Pittman, Taylor Bond, Juan Gonzalez, and Leo De Oliveira have added offensive firepower to the team with a combined 35 goals and 37 assists for 72 points.

SOCKERS 2 FINISH MASL2 SEASON 12-0

The Sockers 2 defeated the Ontario Fury II 14-0 to conclude their second MASL2 season with a perfect 12-0 record. The win, which was the second consecutive shutout for the team, put San Diego into the MASL2 Championship Cup Final Four on March 29-30 in Ontario. San Diego is the #1 seed and will be joined by three of the six teams who play this weekend in the first round of the postseason.
