San Antonio FC Hosts Swope Park Rangers at Toyota Field

April 6, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Antonio FC News Release

SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio FC (1-1-1) will host Swope Park Rangers (3-1-0) at Toyota Field on Saturday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m, presented by SWBC. The game marks the first of three matchups between the two clubs this season and the seventh overall.

SAFC will look to earn a win at home after recording its first clean sheet of the season last Saturday in a scoreless draw at LA Galaxy II. Although the team was unable to find the back of the net in their last match, their possession play and defensive efforts have been good.

The team has been forced to adapt in the early stages of the season after a few players were sidelined due to injury, but the versatility and depth of the squad has been shown as other players have stepped up to the challenge and filled positions well. Defender Mike Seth is one of the players who has had to adapt for the benefit of the team. Formerly a forward, Seth adjusted his play in preseason when depth was needed at the fullback position.

"Mike has adapted since preseason to play multiple positions," SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. "He spent a lot of time at the fullback position during preseason and when the opportunity came for him to step into the game, he adjusted into the back line well. It's a testament to his work ethic and he has done a good job playing at left-back the past couple of games."

For Seth, stepping into the defensive line was a change from what he was accustomed to, but nothing new at all. During his first years as a pro soccer player, Seth spent time playing as a fullback and winger. Now, after succeeding as a striker for a few seasons, he's welcoming the challenge of playing in the back again.

"I've felt good playing in a defensive role," Seth said. "I'm playing next to a great group of guys and in my nine years in the league I've played at pretty much every position, so it's a bit of an adjustment but it hasn't been a huge deal."

On Saturday, SAFC will host a tough opponent in Swope Park Rangers. SPR is currently at the top of the Western Conference standings with nine points, and has scored 10 goals in just three matches. Defensive composure will be key for the visitors however, as they've also conceded seven goals. Last season Swope Park Rangers claimed the Western Conference title before losing in the USL Cup final to Louisville City FC.

SAFC is 1-3-2 overall against SPR, and will look to earn their first home win against the club at Toyota Field. The two have played to two draws in San Antonio since 2016, including the Alamo City club's inaugural home opener on April 9, 2016, which ended 1-1.
