Sammons Tops Anderson, Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WIS. - Cedar Rapids Kernels southpaw Bryan Sammons outdueled Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Chase Anderson for a 3-1 Kernels win Tuesday over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Sammons won the series finale against Anderson, who pitched on rehab assignment from the Brewers.

A perfect start and a career-high eight strikeouts were the highlights for Sammons (1-0). He struck out the first five batters that he faced and retired the first 10 hitters overall. Sammons allowed just three hits and one walk while holding the Timber Rattlers scoreless in five innings pitched.

The Kernels (20-25, 59-56) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Anderson (0-1). Christian Cavaness opened the game with a double and later moved to third base on a wild pitch. Hank Morrison produced a two-out RBI infield single to bring in Cavaness. It was the only run Anderson allowed over 3.1 innings pitched in his first start since being placed on Milwaukee's disabled list June 29.

Trey Cabbage stretched Cedar Rapids' lead to 3-0 during the top of the seventh. Shane Carrier extended the frame on a two-out single, and Cabbage hit the next pitch from Braden Webb over the right-field wall for his second Kernels home run.

Wisconsin (20-25, 46-67) broke up the shutout in the eighth but only cut its deficit to 3-1. Following back-to-back two-out singles by Joantgel Segovia and Keston Hiura, Ronnie Gideon added a single of his own against Max Cordy to drive in Segovia from second base. Hector Lujan relieved Cordy and induced an inning-ending force out from Demi Orimoloye to limit the damage. Lujan also held the Timber Rattlers scoreless in the ninth to finish the contest.

Evan Sanders picked up his first professional hold after recording 2.1 shutout innings of relief. Cordy allowed one earned run in one-third of an inning but was still credited with his third hold. Lujan claimed his team-high 12th save. The Kernels earned a 2-2 series split with its victory at Wisconsin.

Cedar Rapids will be idle Wednesday before starting a four-game home series versus the Quad Cities River Bandits. Thursday's opener is set for 6;35 p.m. with Kernels left-hander Tyler Watson (0-1, 6.75) and River Bandits right-hander Carlos Sanabria (4-3, 4.30) scheduled to pitch.
