January 14, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

For the second time this season, the Waterloo Black Hawks wildly outshot the Madison Capitols, only to be outdueled by goaltender Dryden McKay.

During Friday's 4-1 Madison win at Capitol Ice Center, McKay made 55 saves and Mick Messner had a hat trick. When the teams had met in October, the Capitols won 5-1 at Young Arena with 49 saves from their veteran goalie.

The opening period was scoreless; Waterloo put 16 pucks on frame to Madison's four. The Hawks were off to a similar start in the second, yet Madison pulled ahead at 13:40 when Messner swiped the puck at the Waterloo blue line and beat Matej Tomek one-on-one, high to the glove side. Less than two minutes later, the Capitols struck again when T.J. Sagissor made it to the top of the crease to lift in the rebound of his initial shot.

Through two periods, Waterloo was outshooting Madison 33-13. A fast-moving third paused at 10:50 when Messner knocked in his second of the night on a netmouth scramble. McKay's shutout bid finally ended at 16:09. On the power play and with an extra attacker, Jackson Cates connected with Jack Drury across the slot, and Drury rifled in a shot from the right circle to bring Waterloo within two. However, Messner capped the night with an empty net goal from his own blue line at 18:23. It was Madison's fifth shot of the period, compared to 23 for Waterloo.

Next on the Hawks' slate is a Dupaco Cowbell Cup matchup versus the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on the road Saturday. Waterloo is back on home ice Sunday versus the Omaha Lancers at 3:05 p.m.
