Sambuco Makes College Commitment

December 1, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Lincoln Stars News Release

Lincoln Stars forward Daniel Sambuco has committed to play at the University of Vermont, an NCAA Division I program in the Hockey East Association.

Sambuco has scored four goals and added two assists in his first season with the Stars. This season represents Sambuco's fourth consecutive playing multiple games in the USHL.

"It was a tough decision," Sambuco said. "At the end of the I loved the coaching staff. It just felt right and I had that gut feeling about it. The background of the coaching staff stood out and the whole staff runs their team like an NHL organization. I'm excited to get a taste of that by working with them and improving as a hockey player."

Sambuco split last season with the Waterloo BlackHawks and Madison Capitols, scoring seven goals and adding six assists in 49 games. The Springfield, Penn. native also played three games for the US National Team Development Program in 2020-21 and two games for Madison in 2019-20.

Vermont is 5-9-1 to begin the season, including a 4-2 mark on home ice. The Catamounts advanced to the first round of the Hockey East postseason tournament last year.

Vermont head coach Todd Woodcroft is in his third season with the Catamounts after spending four seasons with the Winnipeg Jets as an assistant coach. He previously served as a scout for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota Wild, Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings. He was a video coach for the Wild and then the Capitals prior to his work as a scout.

"I'm really happy for Danny," Stars head coach Rocky Russo said. "It's a great situation for him academically and athletically. He's a Philly kid so going back to the east coast to play his college hockey is a great fit. Their coaching staff is really excited about Danny's identity and how he can help them continue to grow that organization. I'm looking forward to the rest of Dan's year here with Lincoln and we will see what the future holds for him. He could be back another year, he could be heading to school but either way he is in a great situation."

Sambuco and the Stars battle the Fargo Force this weekend at the Ice Box in a matchup of the top two teams in the Western Conference. Friday night's game starts at 7:05 and is $2 Night with beers, soda and hot dogs available for $2. The puck drops at 6:05 on Saturday and it is Superhero Night and Guys Night Out. Fans can purchase a McDonald's Family Package for Saturday's game and get four tickets and two inflatable hockey sticks for $65. Tickets for both games as well as the Family Package can be purchased at lincolnstars.com.
