Salinitri Shines for Oshawa

OSHAWA, Ont. - Anthony Salinitri scored three goals to power the Oshawa Generals to a 7-1 victory Friday night over the North Bay Battalion in an Ontario Hockey League game.

Allan McShane, Brett Neumann, Tyler Tullio and Giovanni Vallati each had one goal and one assist for Oshawa, which boasts a won-lost-extended record of 40-19-4 for 84 points, second in the East Division and fourth in the Eastern Conference. Goaltender Kyle Keyser faced 28 shots before 5,287 at the Tribune Communities Centre.

Justin Brazeau scored for North Bay, 27-31-5 for 59 points, fourth in the Central Division and eighth in the conference. Goaltender Christian Propp allowed six goals on 38 shots before being replaced by Christian Purboo, who gave up one goal on seven shots.

Brazeau has 54 goals and 45 assists for 99 points in 63 games, eclipsing Mike Amadio for the most points in a season by a Battalion player in the North Bay era. Amadio had 50 goals and 48 goals for 98 points in 68 games in 2015-16. The only player with more points in a season is Wojtek Wolski, who had 47 goals and 81 assists for 128 points in 56 games in 2005-06 for Brampton.

The Battalion, outshot 16-9 in the first period, scored the only goal at 11:37 when Brazeau's drive from the slot deflected off the left post and into the net before bouncing back into play. Referee Jason Goldenberg signaled no goal despite the celebratory actions of several Battalion players. At the next stoppage 10 seconds later, Goldenberg conferred with the video goal judge and the call was reversed. Matthew Struthers and Braden Henderson earned the assists.

Propp had a strong period, denying chances for Kyle MacLean, who had two assists, Tullio and Ian Blacker.

McShane tied it at 7:00 of the second period, getting past David Maier, breaking in alone on Propp and working the puck around his outstretched left pad.

Salinitri banked the puck off Propp's right pad into the net from a sharp angle to the goaltender's left at 11:24 for what proved to be the winning goal, and the Generals took a 3-1 lead at 14:43 as Salinitri drove to the net and chipped the puck under Propp's right arm.

North Bay, which was outshot 19-9 in the frame, had its best chance in the 13th minute when Mitchell Russell broke in on Keyser, who kicked away the shot with his left pad.

Salinitri completed a hat trick on the power play 46 seconds into the third period when his shot from the top of the right-wing circle eluded Propp, who was screened by McShane. Salinitri has 45 goals on the season, including 31 since joining the Generals in a trade from the Sarnia Sting.

Rookie Tullio ended Propp's night with the teams skating four-on-four at 8:20. Tullio beat the goaltender high to the stick side off a faceoff before defenceman Vallati struck on the power play with a drive from the blue line at 10:24.

The Battalion plays host to the Peterborough Petes at 2 p.m. Sunday.

BATTALION BULLETS: Rogers used an all-female telecast crew in honour of International Women's Day. Among the participants was Laura Barney, who hosted Battalion games on Rogers for two years at Brampton. She has been the host of Hamilton Bulldogs games on Cable 14 since 2015-16 ... The teams completed their season series, with the Battalion going 1-3-0 against Oshawa, taking the win 4-2 at home Jan. 3 with Brad Chenier scoring the winning goal and an empty-netter ... Brazeau has 121 goals and 103 assists for 224 points, surpassing Raffi Torres for sole possession of fifth place on the franchise scoring list. Brazeau played a 263rd game, tying Amadio for eighth place in franchise history. In four games against Oshawa, Brazeau had five goals and one assist for six points ... Struthers has a four-game points streak in which he has two goals and four assists for six points ... The Battalion went 0-for-3 on the power play. Oshawa was 2-for-8 ... North Bay was without Pacey Schlueting, Travis Mailhot and Kurtis Evans ... Russell turned 18 on Wednesday ... Keyser marked his 20th birthday Friday ... Rookie defenceman Lleyton Moore, acquired from the Niagara IceDogs in a Jan. 8 trade, debuted with Oshawa after an injury ... Salinitri has a five-game points streak in which he has five goals and four assists for nine points ... MacLean has a four-game assists streak in which he has six assists ... Jesse Wilmot was the other referee.
