Saint Louis Slugger Signs with Marlins

February 25, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C.- Outfielder Danny Murphy has signed with the Marlins for the 2014 season. Murphy, a junior at Saint Louis University, will be looked upon to add some pop to the Marlins lineup. A familiar face will greet Murphy when he arrives, as he spent his first two collegiate seasons playing for Marlins head coach Sam Carel at Jefferson College.

Murphy was a standout performer in his two seasons for the Vikings. In 2012, he hit .401 with 14 doubles, eight home runs, and 64 RBIs and the team had a record of 51-10 on its way to an appearance in the Junior College World Series. He followed that up in 2013 by hitting for a .412 average, 15 doubles, seven home runs, and 39 RBIs.

Murphy, a native of Saint Louis, returns home to suit up for SLU. The Billikens have won back to back A-10 championships, and look to be strong contenders again in 2014. The left-handed hitting Murphy has started all six of SLU's games thus far this spring. He is hitting .238 with one run scored, one RBI, one stolen base, and has a .333 on base percentage. He started off his Billiken career in style by going 2 for 3 with a double and a triple against 21st ranked Alabama on February 14th.

As a senior at Mehlville High School in Saint Louis, Murphy hit .476 with nine doubles, four home runs, 36 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases. He was named second team All-State, first team All-Metro, and the Suburban West Metro Player of the Year.

The Marlins open the 2014 season on the road against the Fayetteville Swampdogs on May 27th. The home opener is the following night, May 28th, when they again take on the Swampdogs. Season tickets and flex books are on sale now at www.mhcmarlins.com and at the Marlins Team Store, located at 508-D Evans Street in Morehead City.
