Road Trip Opens with 7-2 Win

April 22, 2013 - Texas League (TL1) - Arkansas Travelers News Release

Tulsa, OK - The Arkansas Travelers hit a pair of home runs and received a strong performance from Jarrett Grube to open an eight-game road trip with a 7-2 victory over the Tulsa Drillers on Monday night. Grube (3-0) hurled the longest start of the season for the Travs lasting seven innings with just one run allowed on six base hits. Drew Heid had three base hits including a home run (1) while Rolando Gomez added a long ball (1) as well.

The victory evens the Travs with the Drillers in the Texas League North standings with a record of 7-8.

Grube had made 121 appearances with the Drillers from 2007-2009 as a reliever and initially had to find a way out of tight situations in the first two innings.

Tulsa loaded the bases in the first inning with just one out, but Grube induced a weak comeback liner from Kiel Roling and doubled Henry Wrigley off first base.

The Travs handed Grube a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to back-to-back doubles. Randal Grichuk nailed the bottom of the wall with a double followed by a high fly ball to left field hit by Heid. Left fielder Kyle Parker misplayed the ball as it zipped past him to the warning track allowing Grichuk to score.

Parker then led off the bottom of the second inning with a blast to the centerfield wall. Initially it appeared the ball cleared the fence and Parker rounded the bases. However Travs manager Tim Bogar appealed that the ball had become stuck in the outfield fence. After conferring the umpires agreed with Bogar and changed the ruling to a ground rule double. After Grube plunked the next Drillers batter, Jose Gonzalez laid down a sacrifice bunt putting runners at second and third with just one out. Still Grube got through it by striking out Christhian Adames before Delta Cleary, Jr. flied out.

Gomez increased the Travs lead to 2-0 when he led off the third with a drive over the right field fence.

Tulsa once again threatened getting a leadoff double in the third from Joey Wong, but Grube retired the next three leaving Wong at third.

Second baseman Taylor Lindsey enjoyed his first three-hit game of the year, which included a double to lead off the fourth. Grichuk's sacrifice moved him to third and a passed ball charged to Gonzalez improved the Travs lead to 3-0.

The only run Grube allowed came in the fourth inning when Jayson Langfels powered a homer to left field. Grube bounced back and set down the next 11 batters before giving way to the bullpen.

Jett Bandy hit a single to begin the fifth which was followed by a walk to Gomez and a bloop single by Kaleb Cowart loading the bases with no outs. C.J. Cron plated Bandy with a slow groundout, but Lindsey put the Travs up 6-1 with a two-run single to right field.

Tulsa right hander Christian Bergman (1-1) took the loss in a five-inning start where he allowed more runs than he had in his first three starts combined. The Travs scored six runs (five earned) off Bergman on seven hits and two walks.

Travs reliever Daniel Tillman allowed the Drillers' second run in the eighth inning on a walk and two wild pitches.

Heid connected on the Travs' second homer of the night in the eighth inning off Tim Sexton to cap the night.

The second game of the series is set for 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday night. Brandon Hynick makes his season debut for the Travs battling Tulsa righthander Chad Bettis (0-1, 3.60).
