RiverDogs Host Sand Gnats for Final Homestand of First Half

CHARLESTON- The Charleston RiverDogs will end the first half of the 2008 South Atlantic League (SAL) season hosting a three-game homestand against the Savannah Sand Gnats, the Class-A affiliate of the New York Mets, from June 13 through 15 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
First pitch for Friday and Saturday's night games is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., while Sunday's half-ending contest begins at 4:05 p.m.
Friday, June 13, marks another Force Protection Red Shirt Friday, presented by Force Protection Industries, Inc. and WEZL. Fans who wear a red shirt to Friday night home games receive one dollar off their ticket price at the box office, and will then have the option to donate that dollar to support service families. The RiverDogs also will wear special red jerseys on Friday home games, which will be auctioned off at the end of the season to support Charleston Area Service Men and Women.
It is also Being Green Is Hulky Night, where the RiverDogs promotional crew celebrates the release of the new Incredible Hulk movie with movie ticket giveaway and a night full of trivia questions. The RiverDogs are also observing Tony the Peanut Man Night, in which the well-known Riley Park icon sells autographing copies of his new comic book.
In addition, the RiverDogs will celebrate John Henry Moss Night, honoring the former SAL President who retired at the conclusion of the 2007 season after 50 years on the job, making him the longest tenured executive in the history of professional baseball. Moss passes through Charleston as part of his season-long tour, in which he will be visiting each stadium in the circuit.
Saturday, June 14, features a very special event, as the RiverDogs hold their 9th Annual Kindness Beats Blindness RP Silent Auction to benefit the MUSC Storm Eye Institute.
There is an abundance of gifts and services available including tickets to a New York Yankees game at Yankee Stadium - the final season of Yankee Stadium. There will also be the use of an Edisto Island beach house, Lasik eye surgery, golf with Bill Murray, Pit Passes for Lowes Motor Speedway and a behind-the-scenes tours of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, to name a few.
All fans that enter the ball park are eligible to bid on the various goods and services. More than $300,000 has been donated to the Storm Eye Institute from the past eight auctions to help fight retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that causes blindness and that has affected Rebecca Veeck, the daughter of RiverDogs president Mike Veeck and his wife, Libby.
The RiverDogs will also hold their 30" Right-handed Bat Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans to click through the turnstiles, presented by Pierce, Herns, Sloan & McLeod and WCBD-TV 2.
The U.S. Army will be on hand, as well, to commemorate its 200th birthday, which will be highlighted by a special swearing-in ceremony on the field prior to the game.
Sunday, June 15, is another Family Sunday at The Joe, presented by the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Center, MUSC Sports Medicine and WJNI. Families can celebrate Father's Day with the Charleston RiverDogs as they close out the first-half of the 2008 season.
Following the midseason All-Star Break, Charleston begins the second-half of the â08 season with a four-game series against the Columbus Catfish, a Tampa Bay Rays affiliate, from June 19 through the 22. The RiverDogs then host their first homestand of the second-half, a five-game set, starting with a two-game series against the Rome Braves, an Atlanta Braves affiliate, from June 23-24, and finishing with a three-game series against the Catfish from June 25-27.
