River Monsters make a splash in season opener to defeat Bluegrass Warhorses 36-20
LEXINGTON, KY -- Behind the passing of Jared Lorenzen, the athleticism of Maurice Douse and a unyielding defense, the Northern Kentucky River Monsters defeated the Bluegrass Warhorses 36-20 in the CIFL opener for both teams in Lexington, Kentucky.
#22 Jared Lorenzen shook off the rust, and with it defenders from all angles as he threw for 23-37, 183 yards and 3TD's on the night. Showing off his mobility, he even trucked one in from the 1 for another TD. #6 Maurce Douse, a duel threat RB, rushed for 30 yards and 1td while also recording 5 catches for 34 yards and 2 TD's. WR core was led by Shawn McGarity for the night with 7 catches for 43 yards.
"I thought we were a little rough around the edges on offense at times but we moved the ball all night. While you cannot expect your offense to be perfect in the opener, overall the play was solid and something we can continue to build on from here." said Coach Schmidt. Jared's return to the team prompted an unexpected bit of attention from many sportswriters twitter accounts and blogs across the nation, and with a few vine videos, his name was trending on multiple social media sites.
The River Monster defense held Warhorse QB Shane Boyd to 13-29, 154 yards, 2 TD's with 3 INTs, one each by Dakota Marshall, Butch Abshire and David James. After an opening drive touchdown, the defense held the Warhorses scoreless again until late in the 4th quarter. Producing 4 stops each half, the defense consistently gave the offense opportunities to score.
"The defense did a great job tonight, said Coach Goodpaster. Our goal is to fly around with speed and power and make people want to come watch the game not just for the points, but for the vicious hits. I saw a few of those tonight, but not enough. That is something we will improve on going into our next game."
The Northern Kentucky River Monsters home opener is this Sunday February 9th at the Bank of Kentucky Arena against the Erie Explosion. Kickoff is at 2pm and its Monster Madness Night with Monster Abyss from TNA Wresting on hand as the Honorary Captain.
