Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Frisco withstood a two-out, two-run charge by the Hooks in the ninth inning Wednesday night to beat Corpus Christi, 4-3, before 5,040 fans at Whataburger Field.
With the Hooks (29-29) down 4-1 in the ninth, two walks by Nick Gardewine gave the faithful hope. Kyle Tucker, who cracked a two-bagger in the fifth, skied a double into left field, scoring Bryan Muniz and Drew Ferguson . With the tying run at second, Gardewine ended the game by striking out J.D. Davis.
Prior to that final push, Corpus Christi's lone marker was a two-out home run to left field by Jack Mayfield in the eighth.
In the ninth, Michael O'Neil countered the Mayfield clout with a 399-foot solo shot down the left-field line off Rogelio Armenteros .
Frisco (26-32) starter Pedro Payano survived four hits and four walks over 4 1/3 scoreless innings.
Lefty Ryne Slack (2-0) retired all eight hitters he faced, striking out three.
Josh James permitted just two baserunners through the first four innings.
In the Frisco fifth, Royce Bolinger worked a lead-off walk. Three errors and a hit batsman followed, giving the Riders a 1-0 lead. Scott Heineman 's sac fly made it 2-0 Frisco.
Corpus Christi squandered a chance to square the score in the home half. Ferguson coaxed a lead-off free pass and Tucker smoked a double into the right-field corner. Payano fanned Davis for the first out. Slack entered from the Riders pen and dispatched the next two hitters.
Armenteros relieved James (3-2) and, despite two walks, posted a zero in the sixth.
Armenteros found himself in a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the seventh. Isiah Kiner-Falefa lifted a sac fly to left for a 3-0 Riders edge. Shortstop Antonio Nunez made an excellent diving stop to end the inning.
Cy Sneed (4-4, 5.04) takes the ball for Corpus Christi in Game 3. Colin Wiles (5-2, 3.15) is slated to pitch for Frisco. It's Thirsty Thursday with discounted beer and soft drinks presented by Stripes. First pitch 7:05.
