Revs Victorious In First Road Game Of Season
April 25, 2013 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution spoiled the home opener for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Wednesday evening, winning 5-2 in front of 4,215 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium for their second consecutive victory. The Revs will look for a third consecutive win on Thursday night in Waldorf, before their road trip continues on to Bridgeport for the weekend.
The Blue Crabs brought the tying run to the plate in each of the final three innings, but while the Revolution bullpen bent, it did not break in preserving the lead.
York went on top in the second inning when Andy Marte launched the first pitch of the inning over the left field wall for his first home run of the season. Brian Burgamy drove a two-out RBI triple to right-center an inning later, and in the fourth, Andres Perez connected on a two-run homer down the left field line, snapping an 0-for-19 drought to begin the season for the All-Star second baseman, as the Revs built a 4-0 lead.
The Revs added an insurance run in the seventh when Burgamy legged out an attempted inning-ending double play turn, picking up his second RBI of the night to make it 5-0.
Revs starter Matt Fox was outstanding in his first start, striking out six over four scoreless innings, and allowing just three hits and no walks before turning it over to the bullpen.
Southern Maryland set the table with a leadoff walk followed by a single in each of the final three innings, scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth to draw closer. Wladimir Sutil singled home a run in the seventh to break up the shutout, but reliever Julio DePaula retired third-place hitter Brian Barton on a fielder's choice to leave the bases loaded. Cesar Nicolas crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the eighth, cutting the lead to 5-2, but reliever Josh Judy struck out pinch-hitter Kody Hightower before retiring Sutil on a pop-up to shallow right where Perez made a spectacular diving catch to save two runs, keeping the lead intact.
Closer Juan Rincon was greeted with the same start in the ninth inning, a leadoff walk followed by a base hit, but responded by striking out the third, fourth, and fifth hitters in Southern Maryland's lineup, Barton, Nicolas, and Ryan Mulhern to end the game, earning his first Revolution save.
York reliever Joe Torres (1-0) picked up the win. La Plata, MD native Daryl Thompson (0-1) suffered the loss starting the home opener for his hometown Blue Crabs, charged with four runs over 4.2 innings.
York 's Brett Tomko (0-0, 0.00) will face Southern Maryland's Ian Marshall (0-0, 11.25) on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. in Waldorf as the Revs seek their third straight win. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, YorkRevolution.com, and the Shoutcast app (YorkRevs) beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
