New England Revolution News Release

Foxborough, MA- The New England Revolution (4-8-4, 16 pts.) beat the Chicago Fire (4-6-6, 18 pts.) 3-1 on Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium in the second game of a home-and-home series. New England got two goals from forward Taylor Twellman and one from Rookie of the Year candidate Clint Dempsey.

The Fire got on the board first in the 40th minute when midfielder Andy Williams scored his first goal of the season. After a dribble run down the left wing, midfielder DaMarcus Beasley squared the ball to Williams, who was waiting at the top of the penalty area. Williams took a touch on the ball and then bent his shot from 14 yards through two Revs defenders and past goalkeeper Matt Reis to put the Fire up 1-0.

New England evened the score just two minutes into the second half when Dempsey scored his fifth goal of the season. With the ball on the right flank, Richie Baker served a cross to the goalmouth. Dempsey got his head on the ball and powered it off the ground and into the back of the net to even the score at one apiece.

Five minutes later, the Revolution took the lead when Twellman scored the 40th MLS regular-season goal of his career. Receiving the ball at the top of the area, Twellman played a give-and-go with Dempsey and knifed through the Fire defense before blasting a first time shot past Fire goalkeeper D.J. Countess to the far post to the Revs ahead 2-1.

In the 67th minute, New England padded their lead when Twellman scored his second goal of the night off of a corner kick. Midfielder José Cancela served the ball to the near post where midfielder Brian Kamler then lofted a flick-on header to the far post where Twellman was waiting to head the ball past Countess to put the Revs up 3-1.

In the 90th minute, Twellman received a straight red card after a late tackle on Williams. As a result, Twellman will be suspended for the Revs' next match. One minute later, Prus sent Fire midfielder Scott Buete off after issuing him his second yellow card of the match.

With both teams down to 10 men apiece in stoppage time, New England was able to hold on for the 3-1 victory. It was the Revs' third home win of their season and their first victory in July. New England will travel to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend to take on the Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 17th at Crew Stadium for the Revs third game in seven days.
