Revolution Goalkeeper Matt Turner Called in to U.S. Men's National Team Pre-Camp
October 31, 2019 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner has been called in to the United States Men's National Team by Head Coach Gregg Berhalter for an upcoming pre-camp ahead the team's final two Concacaf Nations League Group A matches against Canada on Nov. 15 and Cuba on Nov. 19. Turner is one of 20 MLS players comprising the roster, which will convene from Nov. 2 to Nov. 9 in Bradenton, Fla.
This marks the first international call up of Turner's career, making him one of two first-time invitees in this camp alongside Minnesota United FC defender Chase Gasper. The 25-year-old New Jersey native owns a 16-14-16 with 170 saves and 10 shutouts since signing with the Revolution as an undrafted college player ahead of the 2016 MLS season. In 2019, Turner registered an 8-4-7 record with 87 saves and five shutouts, with one additional start in the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs.
The fourth-year pro finished the regular season ranked fourth among MLS goalkeepers in saves percentage (74.8), fifth in winning percentage (.639), and second in saves per 90 minutes (4.54). Turner's efforts resulted in a fifth-place finish in Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year voting, as well as a multi-year contract extension with New England on Aug. 21, 2019.
The pre-camp will conclude when the FIFA international window officially opens on Nov. 10, at which time the final USMNT roster will convene in Orlando, Fla. The USMNT will then resume Concacaf Nations League play with its final two matches in Group A, facing must-win scenarios in both games to advance to the knockout stage. Berhalter's side will play against Canada on Nov. 15 at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Fla. at 7:00 p.m. ET (ESPN2, UniMas, TUDN), before meeting Cuba on Nov. 19 at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town, Cayman Islands at 7:30 p.m. ET (FS1, UniMas, TUDN).
