New England Revolution News Release
Foxborough, Mass. - The New England Revolution selected three players in Thursday's MLS Supplemental Draft, conducted among the 13 league clubs via teleconference. In the first round (12th overall), the Revs chose Clemson goalkeeper Phil Marfuggi, then added Hofstra defender Gary Flood in the second round (25th overall). The Revolution picked Duke midfielder/forward Chris Loftus in the third round (38th overall), before passing in the final round.
The Revs' three Supplemental Draft selections join the six players New England chosen in last Friday's MLS SuperDraft in Indianapolis: Wake Forest midfielder Wells Thompson, Santa Clara and U.S. Under-20 midfielder/defender Amaechi Igwe, Wake Forest midfielder Ryan Solle, UC-Santa Barbara midfielder Bryan Byrne, Virginia forward Adam Cristman and Duke defender Kyle Helton.
Marfuggi finished his senior season with a 1.29 goals against average and made 67 saves on the year for Clemson. For his career, he had 237 saves, good for fourth on the Tigers' career saves list. He was named to Soccer America's All-America first team in 2005 as a junior, and was a two-time All-ACC selection.
Flood appeared in 21 games for Hofstra as a senior, scoring one goal and adding five assists as one of the Pride's captains for the three-time defending Colonial Athletic Association champions. He was an NSCAA All-South Atlantic selection and was honored as the MVP of the 2005 CAA Tournament.
Loftus scored 24 goals and added 14 assists in 80 appearances for Duke, both at midfield and forward. A two-time Blue Devil captain, Loftus was an All-ACC selection as a junior and an ACC All-Freshman team honoree. He scored one of Duke's two goals against UCLA in the 2006 NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.
The Revolution kicks off the 2007 season on April 7 against the Chicago Fire in Bridgeview, Ill. New England's home opener is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, when the Revs host the league's newest team, Toronto FC - featuring former Revs midfielder José Cancela and former D.C. United forward Alecko Eskandarian - in the second game of a special doubleheader at Gillette Stadium with the U.S. Women's National Team. Season ticket packages - which includes the Women's National Team match, as well tickets to 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup games at Gillette Stadium - are on sale now.
