Redbirds Tie Franchise Record with Ninth-Straight Win Five-Run Eighth Inning Shoots Redbirds to Victory; DeJong Provides Big Blow
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Memphis Redbirds (19-11) won their ninth-straight game Saturday night in Des Moines, Iowa, matching the franchise record for longest winning streak after a 5-2 win over the Iowa Cubs (13-15) in the series opener.
The nine-game streak matches the 2000 club (April 9-17) and the 2014 squad (August 9-18) for the longest winning streak in franchise history, which dates back to 1998in a.
After falling behind 1-0 after 7.0 innings, the Redbirds put together a five-spot in the top of the eighth to take a 5-1 lead. Four-straight singles by Todd Cunningham, Nick Martini, Luke Voit, and Patrick Wisdom opened the inning, with Voit's and Wisdom's knocks scoring runs to put the Redbirds on top, 2-1.
Paul DeJong then cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left-center field, his sixth of the season, to make the score 5-1 in favor of the Redbirds. Mark Montgomery came on and pitched the final two innings to seal the win, and he struck out three while allowing one run.
Mike Mayers worked 6.0 shutout innings in a start and gave up four hits, and he walked and struck out three. Combined with Arturo Reyes' 8.0 shutout innings last night at Omaha and scoreless innings by Daniel Poncedeleon in his final two frames Thursday night, the last three Redbirds' starting pitchers have hurled 16.0 scoreless innings.
During the nine-game winning streak, Memphis has outscored its opponents, 56-28.
