Chicago Stars FC News Release
Chicago, Il. (July 19, 2013) - The Chicago Red Stars are riding a 3-game streak with no losses as they make a late season push towards the playoffs. Tomorrow they will meet the visiting Washington Spirit at 6 p.m. CT at Village of Lisle - Benedictine University Sports Complex. It is the two teams' second meeting of the year after the Red Stars came away 2-0 victors in D.C. on July 10.
Chicago (5-6-4, 19 pts) staged an improbable comeback against 3 rd-place Kansas City last Sunday in Chicago. After going down 3-1, and losing Taryn Hemmings to a late game, season-ending knee injury, the Red Stars had to play with just 10 people on pitch. Two dramatic goals in the waning minutes would secure a 3-3 tie for Chicago and keep them in the playoff picture.
The Red Stars are just a point behind Boston in the standings, and just 5 points off the fourth and final playoff spot, currently held by WNY Flash.
Washington Spirit (1-4-10, 7 pts) have just one win on the year and are at the bottom of the table. But recently they have lost by just a one-goal margin to the surging Seattle Reign and first-place Sky Blue FC. They also tied a strong Kansas City side on July 3.
The Spirit feature the following USWNT players: goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris, midfielder Lori Lindsey, and defender Ali Krieger. Krieger will be sitting out this match after suffering concussion symptoms in Seattle on July 14. They also are home to veteran German international player Conny Pohlers, and dynamic Canadian midfielder Diana Matheson.
Chicago Red Stars v Washington Spirit kicks off tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. and will be streamed live online in both English and Spanish. Fans can also follow the Red Stars Twitter account for live in-game updates: @chicagoredstars. Tickets for the match are still available by visiting chicagoredstars.com or fans can purchase at the box office of the stadium, which opens at 5 p.m. Saturday.
After this match the Red Stars take to the west coast for a 2-game roadtrip where they'll meet Seattle Reign FC and Portland Thorns, on July 25 and July 28, respectively. The July 28 match at Portland Thorns will be an exciting return visit for the Red Stars, after they defeated the Thorns 2-0 at Jeld-Wen Field in the teams' first meeting on June 1. The game will also be featured on Fox Soccer as the NWSL Game of the Week.
