May 31, 2010 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) - Chicago Red Stars News Release

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Red Stars of Women's Professional Soccer announce Monday that Charlie Naimo has been brought in as Red Stars Technical Advisor. The team also announces that Marcia McDermott takes on the title of Red Stars President and General Manager.

Per team policy, terms of their contracts are not disclosed.

Naimo previously was the Los Angeles Sol General Manager and helped organize a club that posted the best regular-season record (12-3-5, 41 points) during the 2009 WPS season and a place in the WPS title match against eventual champion Sky Blue FC. In the near-term, Naimo will assist McDermott primarily with player personnel recommendations and negotiations, and assistance with the Red Stars coaching search. Naimo will continue in his current role as Pali Blues Soccer Club President of Operations and Head Coach.

"I am very excited to join the Red Stars family," Naimo said. "I have always had a great working relationship with Marcia and the ownership there, and it will be an easy transition. I believe the staff has put together a great roster, and it will be an honor to contribute in any way I can to help them become a playoff team in 2010 and beyond."

McDermott has been named Red Stars President in addition to her general manager duties. She becomes the organization's second president, a role previously held by current Milwaukee Wave President/CEO Peter Wilt.

"Marcia is invaluable to us. She has been running our team and operating in the role of President and General Manager for months," said Arnim Whisler, Governor of the Red Stars. "We wanted to formally recognize her many contributions."

McDermott still is serving as temporary Red Stars team coach as she conducts the team's head coaching search. McDermott and the Red Stars are coming off a 1-0 victory over league-leading FC Gold Pride on Saturday at Toyota Park.

Chicago next hosts the Atlanta Beat at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Toyota Park, with the game televised live on Fox Soccer Channel. The team is offering a Family 4 Pack for this match: 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs and 4 soft drinks for only $76. Call 708-496-9500 for tickets.

About Charlie Naimo: Naimo made the move to WPS when he was named GM of the L.A. Sol on Oct. 3, 2008. During his tenure, L.A. won the regular-season title with a 12-3-5 record and earned a place in the WPS Championship match against 2009 title winner Sky Blue FC.

Before L.A., Naimo had a remarkable coaching tenure at the United Soccer Leagues W-League level. Naimo is a two-time W-League Coach of the Year and he posted a staggering 65-3 regular-season coaching record in five seasons from 2004 to 2009. Naimo coached the W-League's New Jersey Wildcats (2004-2006), winning two W-League titles and posting a runner-up finish in 2005. He then spent the 2007 season with Jersey Sky Blue and then led the Pali Blues to the 2008 W-League championship.

About Marcia McDermott: McDermott, the first general manager of the Red Stars organization, becomes the team's second president, a role previously held by Peter Wilt. McDermott was named the 62nd President of the National Soccer Coaches Association of American in January. She served as the temporary team coach during Saturday's 1-0 Red Stars victory over FC Gold Pride. She previously was an associate head coach for the University of Illinois women's soccer team in 2006 and 2007.

Among other coaching duties, McDermott launched Northwestern's women's soccer program in 1994 and led the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament in 1996 and 1998. At the professional level, McDermott coached the Carolina Courage of the Women's United Soccer Association to the 2002 Founders Cup title. As a player, McDermott captured three NCAA titles, including 1986 when she was named an NCAA All-American and served as UNC's team captain.
