Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, Utah (Saturday, August 6, 2011) - Real Salt Lake and partners Zions Bank and El Observador de Utah are proud to announce the second annual Real Salt Lake/Zions Bank Ligas All-Star Game, presented by El Observador de Utah, taking place at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 1:00 p.m. MT.
The Ligas All-Star game is a Hispanic-based community program that showcases local soccer talent from some of Utah's most prominent adult leagues, this year featuring representatives from Liga Premier de Ogden, Liga Mexico-Utah, Liga O.C.D., and Super-Liga. In addition, a pair of youth ligas, Victor's Tires Kids and Santa Teresita, will participate in halftime mini-games and provide children for the pre-game "Dream Teams" and ball kids for the match. In last year's inaugural edition, Team North - which was comprised of Liga Premier De Ogden and Liga Latinoamericana - defeated Team West (Liga O.C.D. and Liga Mexico-Utah) by a 3-1 margin to capture bragging rights throughout the following year.
While last year's debut of the event was part of a doubleheader with Real Salt Lake, this year's Ligas All-Star Game will be a stand-alone event, allowing many of Utah's top amateur players and coaches to have the biggest stage for soccer in Utah all to themselves. Participants in the RSL/Zions Bank Ligas All-Star Game will be determined by fan voting, with ballots included in editions of El Observador de Utah through Sunday, August 14, and text voting available courtesy of Verizon Wireless by sending the name of the player to 72556. Liga presidents have already presented their list of player and coach nominees, and from the 60-man ballot compiled fans will be able to vote for two teams consisting of two (2) coaches, two (2) goalkeepers, six (6) defenders, six (6) midfielders, and four (4) forwards each.
Fans can submit their ballots through the Aug. 14 deadline to representatives in any of the six participating ligas or in person at or via mail to the Real Salt Lake front office at Rio Tinto Stadium (c/o Salvador Perez; 9256 State St.; Sandy, UT 84070). The teams and participants for this year's Ligas All-Star Game will be announced in an edition of El Observador de Utah during the week of Aug. 14.
