Real Monarchs Re-Open 2020 Season Saturday against San Diego Loyal SC

SANDY Utah - Real Monarchs are set to re-open the 2020 USL Championship season on Saturday, July 11 when it welcomes 2020 expansion side San Diego Loyal SC to Rio Tinto Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:00p MT with the match being broadcast nationally on ESPN Deportes and locally on the KSL TV app.

The Monarchs return to play having opened its title defense on March 7, seeing a 1-0 loss at San Antonio FC before the league postponed the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The match will also mark the first team sports match in the United States in four months that will have fans in attendance.

Prior to the match, the club will commemorate the Monarchs 2019 USL Championship Title-winning season with an on-field presentation following pre-match warm-ups.

The Monarchs and San Diego have never faced one another since the Southern California side entered the league for the 2020 season. San Diego is led by USMNT legend Landon Donovan who coached Loyal SC to a 1-1 draw against Las Vegas Lights FC in its inaugural outing before claiming a 2-1 victory over Tacoma Defiance.

Head Coach Jamison Olave enters his first full season at the helm of the club as the permanent head coach after two successful stints as the interim head coach of the group. Olave - together with returning Assistant Coach Matt Glaeser - will look to replicate last season's success during the club's sixth season in the Championship.

For 2020, the Monarchs return a familiar core of players from the 2019 season as defenders James Moberg and Noah Powder lead the backline of one of the league's most elite teams. Defender Andrew Brody also returns to the side having spent the 2019 season on loan with FC Pinzgau Saalfelden in the Austrian third division. Midfielders Jack Blake and World Cup veteran Ricardo Avila return carrying with them a slew of experience into 2020.

New faces in the squad include players with ample USL League One experience including the 2019 League One MVP Arturo Rodriguez and standouts Joe Gallardo and Chris Bermudez. RSL Academy products Jordan Pena, Damian German and Steve Jasso also exemplify the growth pipeline between the Academy and the professional ranks for the 2020 season, each returning for their second season in a Monarchs jersey. The Monarchs also welcome rookie goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton to the roster for 2020.
