San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO (August 21, 2007) - The Phoenix Coyotes announced today that Ray Edwards has been named assistant coach for the San Antonio Rampage, joining head coach Greg Ireland behind the bench.
Edwards, 37, has been a coach in the Central Hockey League and ECHL for the past seven years, most recently with the CHL's New Mexico Scorpions where he guided the team to the Conference Finals this past season in their first year back in the league.
Prior to working in New Mexico, Edwards led the San Angelo Saints to the CHL President's Cup Playoffs in each of his two seasons with the team. Named the CHL's Coach of the Year in his first season with San Angelo after guiding the Saints to a 35-point turnaround leading to a 37-19-8 record and a Southwest Division title, Edwards' Saints narrowly missed their second division title by one point the following season.
A native of Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Edwards has compiled a 161-127-35 record throughout his five years as a head coach. Named one of the youngest head coaches in professional hockey, Edwards began his coaching career at the age of 28 when he took the reins of the ECHL's Huntington (W.Va.) Blizzard in 1998. The following season, he led the Blizzard to their most successful season ever with a 35-25-10 record.
As a player, Edwards recorded 174 points (83 goals, 91 assists) and 1,253 penalty minutes in 309 games over seven seasons in the ECHL. He attended National Hockey League training camps with the Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators.
The Rampage will start their sixth AHL season on October 6. Season ticket packages have been greatly reduced and are on sale now. For ticket information, please call 210.444.5554 or visit sarampage.com.
