RailCats Seek First Championship Since 2007

September 9, 2013 - American Association (AA) - Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary, IN - For the first time since 2009, the RailCats have qualified for a championship series. In addition to being the first playoff appearance as members of the American Assocation, 2013 is the first time the RailCats will play for a championship as league members.

The RailCats and Wingnuts have never met before in a playoff series and the RailCats won 7 of the 13 matchups between the teams. Most recently, the RailCats split a four-game series with Wichita at U. S. Steel Yard from August 20-22. The RailCats swept a doubleheader on August 20 after their game on August 15 was rained out in Wichita.

Thus far during the postseason, the RailCats starting pitching has been their biggest strength. In each of the four games during the RailCats 3-1 series victory over Fargo-Moorhead, the starters went at least six and 2/3 innings and earned the victory in all three of their wins. The RailCats pitching staff surrendered just five runs in 35 innings against Fargo, a 1.29 ERA.

Now, the team will turn their attention to the league's winningest team in 2013, the Wichita Wingnuts. Wichita set American Association records to wins (68) and winning percentage (.680) during the regular season. The team also boasts the Player of the Year, CJ Ziegler, and Manager of the year, Kevin Hooper.

In the postseason, Wichita swept Grand Prairie and their pitching kept the Airhogs from scoring a run during the three-game series. During their semi-final series, Grand Prairie had 25 baserunners (13 hits, 12 walks) and 25 strikeouts.
