Gwinnett Stripers News Release
TONIGHT'S GAME: The third of a four game series and the third of 16 meetings, eight at The Diamond. Clubs have split the first two games. Richmond was 9-7 vs. Durham last season, 4-4 at The Diamond. Game seven of an eight game homestand, the Braves are 3-3. This is the second of 48 games vs. South Division opponents. Richmond was 22-26 vs. the South in '05. The Braves are 60-72 all-time vs. the Bulls. The Braves are third in the South, two games behind first place Durham.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Braves bounced back after spotting the Bulls a 6-0 lead to beat the Bulls 7-6 Tuesday at The Diamond. The Braves scored two runs in the ninth to end the Bulls five game winning streak. Durham blew the game open with a five run first inning. The Bulls scored a run on an error to take a 1-0 lead. Elijah Dukes crushed a three run homer and Shawn Riggans capped the rally with a solo blast to give the Bulls a 5-0 lead in the first. Durham made it 6-0 in the second on an RBI single by Delmon Young. The Braves rallied back in the third, sending 10 men up to score five runs. James Jurries knocked in a run with a single. David Kelton chased two runs home with a double. Carlos Mendez knocked in two runs with a single to cut the Bulls lead to 6-5. That score held up until the last of the ninth. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out. Kelton gave the Braves the win with a sharp two run single. Richmond banged out a season-high 13 hits. Pena and Jurries each had three. Kelton had four RBI. Franklin Nunez picked up the win. J.B. Miadich took the loss. Eric Schmitt worked four innings of scoreless relief for the Braves.
BRAVES BUST OUT: The Braves set season highs in nearly every offensive category in last night's game. Richmond cracked 13 hits. Brayan Pena and James Jurries had the club's first three hit games of the season. Pena also had the club's first pinch hit of the year. David Kelton had the season's first walk-off hit and four RBI game. The Braves four extra-base hits last night is a season high. Richmond batted around in an inning for the first time this year. The five runs scored in the third inning last night is also a season high for runs in an inning. The Braves added 30 points to their team batting average last night (jumping from .201 to .231).
NUMBER CRUNCH: Michael Ryan's three game hitting streak ended last night. David Kelton is 4 for his last 9. The Braves have allowed 10 or more hits in five of their six games. Richmond leads the league in walks issued. Only one Brave on the active roster, Luis Hernandez, does not have previous Triple-A experience. Eric Schmitt's four inning scoreless relief effort last night was the longest for the Braves since Chad Paronto's four inning scoreless appearance vs. Toledo last August 4. The four RBI by David Kelton last night is the most by a Brave since Andy Marte knocked in four last August 23 vs. Louisville. No Brave has driven in more than four since Luis Lopez knocked in five vs. Toledo 6/18/04. The Braves are looking for their first back to back wins of the season. Cesar Crespo has played three positions in the Braves first six games (2B, SS, and CF). Four members of the Richmond club that broke camp have earned call-ups to Atlanta (Joey Devine, Ken Ray, Peter Moylan, and Tony Pena).
