QMJHL three-day camp

Published on August 5, 2011 under Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) News Release

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League will hold in Moncton and Trois-Rivières this weekend and next, its annual training of officials. The Officials Camp will run from Friday to Sunday under the leadership of Richard Trottier, director of Officiating and Marcel Patenaude, executive vice president. A total of 30 officials will be on hand in Moncton to participate in various learning activities to hone their skills for the 2011-12 season. Several speakers will be present for the various workshops, including Jean Hebert, Ghislain Hebert and Eric Furlatt, NHL officials, and Charlie Banfield, NHL supervisor.

"This year we decided to hold two camps, one in Moncton and one in Trois-Rivières to maximize the training time for our officials" said Richard Trottier. "We gather at the beginning of each season to review the regulations and learn any new rules that might have been added. Moreover, it's an excellent opportunity for the QMJHL to get to know the new recruits and to create an enjoyable working atmosphere. Although attendance is mandatory, it remains a welcomed activity for our officials."

The two three-day camps will comprise workshops specific to the learning needs of both referees and linesmen. The referee's main focus will be on positioning, calling penalties, coverage and communication while the linesmen will review face-off procedures, stoppages in play, change-ups and too many men on the ice calls.

Video sequences from the past few seasons will be utilized as a learning tool. The officials will also be submitted to physical and theoretical tests and participate in discussion groups. A few officials will be thanked for their years of dedicated service.
