Quebec City, QC - Following this challenging pandemic season, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is highlighting the hard work of its student-athletes. Today, the league announced the three nominees for the prestigious CIBC Scholastic Player of the Year: Francesco Lapenna (Voltigeurs), Jacob Gaucher (Foreurs) and Mathieu Gagnon (Huskies).
The trophy is awarded annually since 1981 to the player who best combines on-ice performance with success in school. Past recipients of the award include former NHLers Marc Denis, Daniel Brière and Jocelyn Thibault.
Francesco Lapenna studies in Natural Sciences at Cégep à distance. The pandemic forced him to pursue his studies in French, his second language. Nevertheless, he delivered another successful year in class as he maintained an outstanding R-score of 28.7.
Jacob Gaucher's academic record is extremely impressive. He started his Business Degree at the University of New Brunswick at the age of 16. He has already completed 15 University courses and has maintained a formidable GPA of 4.1.
